Kwanza Kenya TM Newsletter - Jan-Feb 2019

Word From The President

Fellow Toastmaster ,

The advent of our Toastmasters year began with the transition to a new Education system, Pathways. Kwanza embraced this change wholeheartedly led by our determined, energetic and diligent Vice President Education, Serah Njoroge. Our Vice President Membership led by Sarah Adhiambo with an exciting membership campaign that resulted in Kwanza achieving the Smedley Award. Moreover, she became the first person in the East African region to achieve a Pathways education award paving the way for many more.

Have you been following our social media pages? If you may have noticed #Kwanza
, #EastAfricaToastmasters, #WhereLeadersAreMade during the East Africa Twitter Challenge where Kwanza yet again took the lead thanks to the digital "savinness" of our Vice President Public Relations, Clifford Kinyua.

We are also pleased to have retained 80% of our members who paid their dues on time through the leadership of our very able Treasurer, Joram Mburu which counted towards our club goals. Our Club Secretary, Josephine Mwaura established a sub committee that makes sure that meetings are well captured.

Finally, Kwanza is home to "Teangle", a tea and mingling session conceived by our every affable Immediate Past President, Nguru Wachira and superbly organized before every meeting by our Sergeant-At-Arms, Irene Onyango.

It is through teamwork demonstrated by this excellent team and the commitment and support by our members that Kwanza is currently the first and the only club in this region to achieve the  "President's Distinguished Club award" having achieved 9 out of 10 goals. With 6 months to go, I have no doubt that 2019 will be a year of dizzying heights and achievements for Kwanza Kenya.

A WORTHWHILE TOASTMASTERS JOURNEY by Japheth Musau

"Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars."- This quote by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale is one of the guide posts that have directed the steps in my Toastmasters journey.
The design of life is such that it personifies each one of us a traveler on a journey to some place. Most of us joined Toastmasters with the belief that the tried and tested education program, the friendly club atmosphere and the guidance of our mentors would all work in concert like many parts of a vehicle to take us to our destination, wherever that may be. By committing to attend club meetings regularly, to do the utmost best when preparing for speech and other meeting roles and to support other members in their journey we create the right climate for growth in the club. Blogging Your Way Into A book

I heard a stalwart Toastmaster in Kenya, and an avid blogger, (Hint: she has not blogged for sometime while her last blog was a blank page titled Jamhuri day),  say that what she loves most about Toastmasters meeting is that she can learn so many things about different things within two hours.

Today she will learn how to Blog Her Way Into A book.

At Kwanza Kenya Toastmasters Club, we have a special talk by Anthony Gitonga, a blogger, speaker, coach, and author of five books, including "Made for Greatness". He will be speaking about, Blogging Your Way into a Book.

Other work by the author include.

Blogging as my creative writing way: http://www.anthonygitonga.com/145-my-creative-way.html

Downtown Toastmasters Club

One of my goals this year is to sponsor a club.

I am thinking of a Club catering for the Nairobi residents who take public transport. As such am thinking of a club meeting downtown, around Hilton-Kencom-Kenya Cinema.
Downtown Toastmasters Club will be its name and it will meet every 2nd and 4th Thursday at Norwich Union House starting 6:00 p.m
We need to build and start with a critical mass of thirty members to be able to get chartered (20 members) and also meet our first-year budget. Please circulate the information in your clubs.

Membership: We welcome these type of members

  1. Transfer Members - A Toastmaster transferring from another club.
  2. Duo Member - A Toastmaster joining Downtown while still keeping is a membership to another club.
  3. New Member - One who has not been member elsewhere.
